Amazon is one of the most well-known e-commerce platforms on the internet. An e-commerce website serves as your virtual storefront on the world wide web. It makes the transaction between a buyer and a seller more convenient. Your online store is the virtual space where you can display your products and where your online customers can make their purchasing decisions. Customers benefit from Amazon’s game-changing one-click ordering feature, which streamlines the online shopping experience and makes the entire process very smooth for them.

Scams on Amazon have been around since the beginning of time, and every day, a new and more ingenious loophole is discovered by the criminal underworld. As an Amazon seller, you must safeguard your company against the various types of scams that appear on the platform on a daily basis. Particularly vulnerable to buyer scams, which can consume a significant amount of your time, peace of mind, and financial resources. Creating a counterfeit seller account on Amazon is a common occurrence, and it appears that it will continue to be a seller’s worst nightmare for many years to come. Furthermore, Amazon sellers must be extremely vigilant against dishonest buyers who attempt to outsmart sellers by hiding behind Amazon’s customer-centric approach.

In this article, we’ll show you how to recognize unethical business practices so that you can protect yourself and avoid any unpleasant situations from occurring.

Types of Common Buyer Scams on Amazon

Scams affect businesses of all sizes, but smaller businesses selling on Amazon may suffer losses as a result of buyer scams and the payment of a third party to conduct sales transactions reviews. However, although Amazon FBA sellers are unable to screen their own transactions, they can choose to have Amazon send returned items to unfulfilled inventory. It is important to keep in mind that Amazon is a customer-focused company. Its policies are generally written in a way that is beneficial to buyers at the expense of sellers.

Unsuccessful Delivery

This type of scam has been around since the beginning of the internet’s existence. An example of this unethical practice is when a buyer claims that an item they purchased online did not arrive as promised. In turn, they request a refund from the company. Thanks to sellers who use shipping methods that include tracking options, this practice has, fortunately, been steadily declining in recent years. Tracking is critical for sellers, especially when dealing with high-value items. Verifying that the order was delivered and being aware of the time it was delivered can help you avoid a legal situation.

Refund and Replace

In this scenario, customers purchase a product and then exchange it for a damaged one in order to obtain a refund. It occurs most frequently in the gaming industry. The only thing that sellers can do is to attach tamper-proof stickers to their products after performing a quality test on them. It will break if a purchaser attempts to tamper with the sticker in this manner. Stickers can also be used to verify that the product received was, in fact, the one that was ordered by you.

Email Scams

Because email is the most common method of disseminating links, email scams are closely associated with phishing. Amazon will never request that you log in with your email address. If you want to keep your seller account safe, only log into Amazon directly. It is critical that you ignore any emails sent to you from addresses other than Amazon’s. It is possible to see the emails you receive from buyers in your Seller Central Account. You should never send an item to a buyer if the purchase does not appear in your “Your Orders.” If you receive an email of this nature, do not respond and simply delete it. Scammers will attempt to obtain personal information from you.

Amazon Scam Case - $27 Million Lost Due to an Impersonator

From July 2020 to June 2021, con artists posing as Amazon employees defrauded Americans out of $27 million by impersonating Amazon employees. These fraudsters were involved in a scam involving “business impersonators.” Criminals impersonate someone the consumer already trusts — in this case, a fictitious Amazon representative — in order to trick the consumer into sending money to them. According to the Federal Trade Commission, reports of Amazon impersonators have increased fivefold over the past year. Approximately 96,000 people reported being targeted by an Amazon-related scam during that time period, accounting for 35% of all consumer complaints about business impersonators, according to the Federal Trade Commission, which described posing as Amazon as a “runaway favorite” ploy for scammers as a “runaway favorite.” (Apple impersonators were the source of 16,000 complaints or 6% of all complaints.)

According to the Federal Trade Commission, approximately 6,000 victims of bogus Amazon scams reported that they had lost money. The average person was out $1,000 in this situation. Since these instances were all self-reported by consumers, it is possible that the true number and value of scams are significantly higher. Older adults over the age of 60 are particularly vulnerable. Although younger people are vulnerable to a wider range of scams on social media, it was found that older people were more than four times more likely than younger people to report losing money to scammers posing as Amazon; the average older victim lost nearly twice as much ($1,500) as their younger counterparts, according to the Federal Trade Commission.

Business Email Compromising

Safeguard Yourself Against Amazon Scams

This Chargeback Way news coverage shows that warning signs to look out for. However, some of the most important include knowing the difference between genuine and fake email addresses as well as URLs. Reporting scam incidents is also a good first step.

An authentic Amazon email message will always come from the domain @amazon.com. Anything else will be a ruse to defraud you. The sender address of an email that looks like this is likely to be a scam because anyone can register a domain like “amazonsellerservices.com.” The goal of scam artists is to create spoof pages that look exactly like real Amazon pages. A genuine Amazon URL will always begin with the domain.amazon.com, which includes sellercentral.amazon.com, among other things.
